Comparing "The Taming of the Shrew" to "The Wedding Singer".
The Taming of the Shrew written by William Shakespeare, is a play and while is not modern, there are clear connections between love, romance and courtship with the modern world. My main focus is expectations in relationships, more specifically male ones and a bit of parental interference in courtship/dating. I've analyzed societies
"First were we sad, fearing you would not come, Now Sadder that you come so unprovided. Fie, doff this habit, shame to your estate, An eyesore to our solemn festival."
Taming of the Shrew showed that security was an essential aspect of marriage and ultimately love. Linda and Robbie's modern relationship is similar and ultimately falls apart because Robbie is a Wedding Singer and lives in his mother's basement which isn't quite enough for Linda. Robbie's friend also explains that security isn't important to just some people but ALL people.
"If either of you both love Katherine, Because I know you well and love you well, Leave shall you have to court her at your pleasure.
(Act i. Sc. I, 52-54)
Katherine the shrew's father Baptista is desperate for someone to marry her. Once Katherine is married, the sweet Bianca the shrew's sister can be married to a proper suitor no problem. Julia's mother kept insisting on setting a date for the wedding before Julia "starts to grow facial hair" similarly to Baptista, the "Shrew's father in the sense that he wanted her to get married as soon as possible. While both Julia and Katherine are young, the parents make it a point to interfere and see that they are married fast because they are young and it's simply expected of them.
Julia's mother wants her to get married as soon as possible, she even illy advises her to fake a pregnancy.
In the end, Petruchio sucessfully "tames" Katherine to everyone's surprise and Robbie saves Julia from marrying the wrong guy and marries her instead despite his lack of security.

Petruchio, a fortune seeker, determined to "tame" a strong-willed young woman named Katherine goes through the motions of a respectable man at his time to have Katherine's hand in marriage. With this, expectations of being a highly respected husband come with the marriage. Robbie, a wedding singer, is engaged to his fiancé Linda a difficult scatter minded young lady who doesn't know what she wants. One thing is for sure, she knows what comes with a respectable relationship such as security, which Robbie lacks. The Wedding Singer has a twist though, Robbie finds himself wanting to be with his friend Julia who is about to get married to Glen who is not faithful to Julia at all.
"First were we sad, fearing you would not come, Now Sadder that you come so unprovided. Fie, doff this habit, shame to your estate, An eyesore to our solemn festival."
(Act III, Scene II, 99-101)It was important to Katherine's reputation in the sense of security from her new husband to dress appropriately at their wedding where all the guest would see Petruchio. After arriving late, Katheine's father Baptista practically begs Petruchio to change into other clothes, but he won't have it because he thinks Katherine should love him the way he is. This particular scene can be related to the movie in the way that Linda explains to Robbie that she can't marry him because of his job and lack of money. In both cases the women are being "robbed" of their dignity because their potential fiancés are not fulfilling the expectations of men.
